Golden Tea from Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in Hunan Province won several awards for its quality at the First China National Black Tea Contest on August 27.

Golden needle tea garnered a special gold medal in the category of budding, while golden black tea took home a gold medal in the category of budding and leaves.

In addition, golden black tea from old tea trees claimed a silver medal in the category of budding and leaves.

The contest received 220 black tea varieties from Hunan and other nine provincial-level production regions across the country.

Xiangxi, which is located in the hinterland of the Wuling Mountains, boasts unique geographical and climatic conditions. As a key production area of green tea in both Hunan and China, the prefecture is widely known for its selenium-enriched soil, a special fermentation belt of microorganisms and a botanical linolenic acid belt.

Therefore, tea from Xiangxi is reputed for its high quality, special taste, fragrant flavor and rich microelements. For instance, Guzhang Miaojian Tea was listed as a tribute to the royal families of the Tang and Qing Dynasties.

He Jiguang (1939-2002) was a singer native to Guzhang. His song "Bringing Tea Leaves to Beijing" was a massive hit across the country in the 1960s.

During the past years, Xiangxi government has brought into full play the vital role of the tea industry in poverty reduction, and accelerated the building of industrial parks, the cultivation of leading enterprises, brands and innovative sales channels, and the exploration of cultural deposits in a drive to promote high-quality development and further expand the market share of local tea products.
